The bus fare is approximately $2.50 per person. The journey takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. Ask the driver to drop you off near Leone Bay.

    Leone Bay, located on the southwestern coast of Tutuila Island, is a site of immense historical and cultural importance in American Samoa. The village of Leone, which borders the bay, was the ancient capital of Tutuila and played a pivotal role in early Samoan-European interactions.In 1832, missionary John Williams first set foot on Samoan soil here, marking the beginning of organized Christianity in the region. A monument stands in front of the Zion Church, the first church built in American Samoa, commemorating this event. The church itself is a sight to behold, boasting three towers, a carved ceiling, and stained-glass windows.Before the advent of steamships, Leone Bay served as the preferred anchorage for sailing vessels, offering a safer alternative to the confined Pago Pago Harbor. Its strategic location made it a vital resting point for travelers between Upolu, Tutuila, and the Manu'a Islands. The name 'Leone' originates from a famine that once struck Tutuila; the village, however, had abundance, hence 'Le One' (No Famine), and provided for other villages, earning it the title “Leone o le Tinā o le Alofa” – Leone is the Mother of Love.Today, Leone Bay continues to be a lively municipal center, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in Samoan culture and history. With its scenic beaches and historical landmarks, Leone Bay provides a unique and enriching experience for those seeking to explore the heart of American Samoa.
