Tia Seu Lupe: Ancient Pigeon-Catching Mound

Tia Seu Lupe, located in Tafuna, American Samoa, is a significant historical site showcasing Samoan culture and heritage. The name translates to "earthen mound to catch pigeons," reflecting its original purpose. These star mounds were primarily used for pigeon hunting, a popular sport among Samoan chiefs. Chiefs would compete for the hand of another chief's daughter or wife by trying to capture the most pigeons. The site features a restored stone structure believed to be platforms constructed for pigeon catching. Archaeologists believe the restored pigeon-catching mound resembles the later marae of Eastern Polynesia. Tia Seu Lupe is near the Holy Family Catholic Cathedral at Ottoville, within a historical park adjacent to the Fatuoaiga Catholic Church Center. It is the most accessible of American Samoa's star mounds, featuring a viewing platform where visitors can observe the two distinct tiers of the structure. The historical park is located next to the only patch of lowland rainforest still found on Tutuila Island.
