    From Fagasa Pass, where the Mount 'Alava Trailhead is located, the hike to the summit is approximately 3.5 miles. The trail is well-maintained and offers a moderate climb through the rainforest. There are no fees associated with hiking the trail.

  • Public Transport

    Local buses (aiga buses) travel around Tutuila Island, originating and terminating at the market in Fagatogo. You can take a bus towards Fagasa Pass and then walk the remaining 1.2 miles to the trailhead. Bus fares range from $0.50 to $2.00. Buses do not run on Sundays.

  • Taxi

    Taxis are available at the airport and throughout the island. A taxi from Pago Pago to Fagasa Pass will cost approximately $20-$30. From there, you can hike to the summit.

Mount 'Alava, reaching an elevation of 1,610 feet (491 meters), is a prominent peak within the National Park of American Samoa, offering breathtaking views and a rewarding hiking experience. The mountain is accessible via two main trails: the Mount 'Alava Trail and the Mount 'Alava Adventure Trail. The Mount 'Alava Trail, a 7-mile round trip, is considered moderate, following a wide, mostly grassy path. The Mount 'Alava Adventure Trail is shorter at 3.6 miles round trip but presents a more challenging climb with 56 ladders and 783 steps, traversing through a unique rainforest ecosystem. From the summit, hikers are treated to sweeping vistas of Tutuila Island, including Pago Pago Harbor, the surrounding waters, and the verdant landscape. On clear days, it's even possible to see the islands of Western Samoa and the Manu'a District in the distance. The summit also features an observation platform and the remnants of an abandoned aerial tramway, which once transported visitors directly to the mountain top from Utulei. Historically, the trail was an essential route for villagers from Fagasa and Vatia to access the market and harbor in Pago Pago. A broadcast station was established on Mount 'Alava in 1964, further adding to its significance.
