Ta'ū Island, part of American Samoa's Manu'a District, is a destination steeped in history and natural splendor. As the largest island in the Manu'a Group and the easternmost volcanic island of the Samoan archipelago, Ta'ū boasts a landscape sculpted by volcanic activity and time. The island's highest point, Lata Mountain, rises to 931 meters, offering breathtaking panoramic views. Historically, Ta'ū served as the center of power for the Manu'a Islands, hosting the Tui Manu'a paramount chieftaincy. The island holds significance as the site where the Manu'a Islands were ceded to the United States in 1904. Archaeological discoveries in Ta'ū Village reveal cultural layers dating back to the Ancestral Polynesian period, aligning its history with that of Western Samoa. The southeastern half of Ta'ū, including the rainforest atop Lata Mountain, the caldera, and the southern shoreline, falls within the National Park of American Samoa. This park protects diverse ecosystems and the ancient, sacred site of Saua, considered the birthplace of the Polynesian people. Visitors to Ta'ū can explore the island's natural wonders, including the Valley of Giants, home to the 500-year-old coral colony known as "Big Momma." Hiking trails offer access to stunning viewpoints and encounters with native flora and fauna. The island's pristine waters are ideal for snorkeling and kayaking. Ta'ū offers a tranquil escape, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in Samoan culture and the untouched beauty of the South Pacific.
