Discover more about Turtle and Shark

Turtle and Shark (Laumei ma Malie in Samoan) is more than just a picturesque cove; it's a place where Samoan legend comes to life. Located on the southern shore of Tutuila, near the village of Vaitogi, this U-shaped cove is the setting for one of the island's most well-known tales. The legend tells the story of a blind woman, Fonueau, and her daughter, Salofa, who lived in a time of great famine. Neglected by their village and denied food, they jumped off a cliff into the ocean. The legend says they transformed into a turtle and a shark. It is believed that they swam to Vaitogi and were welcomed by the chief and his people. Grateful, they vowed to stay and entertain the villagers when called upon. Today, villagers sing a melody, believing a turtle and a shark will appear in response. The cove itself is a dramatic sight, with high-energy waves frequently crashing against the basalt cliffs, sending spray high into the air. While swimming is not recommended due to the dangerous conditions, the area offers stunning views and a chance to connect with Samoan culture. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, recognizing its significance to the people of American Samoa and the preservation of their cultural and historical identity.
