Discover more about Mount 'Alava

Mount 'Alava, the second-highest peak on Tutuila Island, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Pago Pago Harbor and the surrounding landscapes of American Samoa. Reaching an elevation of 491 meters (1,610 feet), the summit is accessible via two main trails, each providing a distinct hiking experience. The Mount 'Alava Trail, starting at Fagasa Pass, is a longer, more gradual climb along a wide, sometimes muddy path through the rainforest. This 7-mile round trip offers glimpses of the coastline and lush greenery. Alternatively, the Mount 'Alava Adventure Trail, beginning in Vatia, is a shorter but more challenging 3.6-mile hike that includes steep ascents and even ladders, offering a thrilling adventure through the jungle. At the summit, an observation platform provides sweeping views of Tutuila Island, and on clear days, you might even spot the islands of Western Samoa and the Manu'a District in the distance. The mountain also holds historical significance, as it once housed a tramway that transported equipment and personnel for a broadcast station established in 1964. Though the tramway is no longer in operation, remnants of its base station can still be found, adding a touch of history to the natural beauty.
