Discover more about Blunts Point Trail

Blunts Point Trail, located in the Eastern District of Utulei, offers hikers a rewarding experience combining historical significance with breathtaking natural beauty. The trail leads to Blunts Point Battery, a World War II coastal defense installation that played a crucial role in protecting the region. As you ascend the moderately challenging trail, you'll be surrounded by lush vegetation and serenaded by the sounds of native birds. The path winds through the rainforest, offering glimpses of vibrant flora and the chance to spot local wildlife. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, as some sections can be rocky and uneven. At the summit, you'll discover the well-preserved gun emplacements of Blunts Point Battery. These six-inch naval guns, installed by the United States Marines, stand as silent sentinels overlooking Pago Pago Harbor. Interpretive signs provide historical context, detailing the battery's strategic importance after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941. From this vantage point, enjoy panoramic views of the harbor and the vast Pacific Ocean. While exploring the area, be mindful of the potential for slippery conditions, especially after rain. The ammunition storage area near the gun battery is often flooded and best avoided. For those seeking a longer hike, the Blunts Point Trail connects seamlessly with the World War II Heritage Trail. However, be aware that this connecting trail becomes steeper, narrower, and less maintained.
