Casa de la Vall: Andorra's Historic Parliament

Explore Casa de la Vall in Andorra la Vella: a historic parliament, architectural gem, and symbol of Andorran identity and rich heritage.

4.6

Casa de la Vall, located in the heart of Andorra la Vella, is one of Andorra's most emblematic and historically significant buildings. Constructed in 1580 as a fortified manor house for the Busquets family, it showcases a blend of medieval and Renaissance architectural styles. The building's robust stone exterior, complete with a watchtower, reflects its original defensive purpose. In 1702, Casa de la Vall was acquired by the Consell de la Terra (General Council), becoming the seat of Andorra's parliament for over three centuries. This marked a pivotal moment in Andorran history, as the building witnessed the transformation of the principality from a feudal society into a modern parliamentary democracy. The Council Chamber, the Courtroom, and the Cabinet of the Seven Keys, where Andorra's most important historical documents were kept, all contributed to the building's political importance. Even after the parliament moved to a new building in 2011, Casa de la Vall remains a vital part of Andorra's cultural heritage. Visitors can explore its historic rooms, admire the original wall paintings and antique furnishings, and learn about Andorra's unique political system through audio-guided tours. The building also hosts special functions of the General Council and celebrations of Andorran National Day. The exterior features a square with sculptures depicting important moments in Andorran history.
