Parc Natural de la Vall de Sorteny: A Pyrenean Paradise

Parc Natural de la Vall de Sorteny, established in 1999, is a protected area in the Ordino parish of Andorra, preserving the biodiversity of the Pyrenees. The park spans 1,080 hectares and features diverse landscapes, from lush meadows to rocky peaks. The park is home to over 700 species of plants, including many rare and endemic varieties. Spring and summer bring vibrant wildflower displays, while birdwatchers can spot various bird species. The park also has heritage sites, including traditional stone huts and old farming terraces. The park offers well-marked hiking trails for all levels, including the popular route to Sorteny Valley. Other trails lead to Pic de l'Estanyó and Pic de la Serrera, offering panoramic views. The Sorteny River runs through the park, enhancing its scenic beauty. Visitors can also explore the botanical garden with nearly 300 plant species classified by habitat. Historically, the area had mining operations in the 17th and 18th centuries due to iron and copper minerals. Today, the park focuses on responsible tourism, offering guided excursions and interpretive trails. The Sorteny refuge provides accommodation and traditional Andorran cuisine. The park was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2020, recognizing its ecological significance.
