Sant Miquel d'Engolasters: A Romanesque Jewel

Nestled in the Andorran Pyrenees, Sant Miquel d'Engolasters stands as a testament to the country's rich religious and architectural heritage. This charming Romanesque church, dating back to the 12th century, offers visitors a serene escape and a glimpse into Andorra's medieval past. The church's architecture is a prime example of Lombard Romanesque style, characterized by its simple yet elegant design. Built with local stone, the church features thick walls, semicircular arched windows, and a slender, 17-meter-high bell tower that is disproportionate to the nave but fundamental to the complex, becoming a landmark visible from a distance. This unique bell tower is adorned with sculpted heads at the top between the arches of the mullioned windows, which are some of the few examples of Romanesque sculpture in Andorra. Inside, visitors can admire a reproduction of the original Romanesque murals that once adorned the apse. The original murals, attributed to the Master of Santa Coloma, are now preserved in the National Art Museum of Catalonia. The replica showcases a Maiestas Domini (Christ in Majesty) surrounded by a tetramorph, with the Archangel Michael merged with the symbol of Saint Matthew, an unusual representation that lends uniqueness to the ensemble. Located at an altitude of 1,500 meters, Sant Miquel d'Engolasters blends seamlessly into the mountainous landscape. The surrounding area offers hiking trails with panoramic views of the Andorra la Vella valley and Lake Engolasters, enhancing the church's appeal as a destination for both history enthusiasts and nature lovers. The church is a popular tourist destination, with guided tours available during the summer months.
