Sant Miquel d'Engolasters: A Romanesque Jewel

Sant Miquel d'Engolasters, located in the picturesque parish of Escaldes-Engordany, is a captivating example of Romanesque architecture in Andorra. Dating back to the 12th century, this church stands as a testament to the country's rich cultural and religious heritage. The church's architecture retains many of its original Romanesque features, including a rectangular nave, a semicircular apse, and a distinctive bell tower that stands approximately 17 meters tall. The bell tower's height, disproportionate to the nave, makes it a unique landmark visible from a distance. Constructed from local stone, the church exhibits the simplicity and sturdiness characteristic of Romanesque design. Inside, visitors can admire a replica of the 12th-century mural, "Maiestas Domini," created by the Master of Santa Coloma. The original mural is housed in the National Art Museum of Catalonia. The replica showcases Christ in Majesty surrounded by a tetramorph, with the Archangel Michael, the church's patron saint, merged with the symbol of Saint Matthew. This unusual representation adds a unique element to the ensemble. Surrounded by the breathtaking Andorran mountains, Sant Miquel d'Engolasters offers panoramic views of the valley. The serene environment invites visitors to explore the hiking trails that start near the church, providing a harmonious blend of spirituality and nature. The church is easily accessible by car, bicycle, or public transport. It is open to visitors and guided tours are available during the summer.
