Saint Peter the Martyr de les Escaldes: A Modern Sanctuary

The Església de Sant Pere Màrtir, or Saint Peter the Martyr de les Escaldes, is a prominent Catholic church located in Les Escaldes-Engordany, Andorra. Constructed between 1956 and 1981, the church stands as a relatively modern example of religious architecture in the region. Designed by Josep Danés, the church was built in the Romanesque Revival style, featuring a basilica plan with a central nave and two side aisles. The church's exterior is characterized by its use of granite stone and a square bell tower, reflecting Lombard Romanesque styling. Inside, visitors can admire stained glass created by the Rigalt and Granell families of Barcelona, which illuminate the interior with vibrant colors. The church also houses a Baroque altarpiece, preserved from a previous church dedicated to Peter of Verona. Murals by Núria Llimona depict 16 figures, mostly unidentified saints, adding to the church's artistic richness. A sculpture of the Pietà, created by Josep Viladomat, is another notable artwork within the church. Saint Peter the Martyr de les Escaldes serves not only as a place of worship but also as a cultural landmark. The church was registered as a heritage property in the Cultural Heritage of Andorra. It continues to be an important spiritual center for the local community, hosting religious ceremonies and events throughout the year.
