Discover more about Casa de la Vall

Casa de la Vall, or House of the Valley, is one of Andorra la Vella's most emblematic historical buildings. Constructed in 1580 as a manor and defensive tower for the Busquets family, it was acquired in 1702 by the Consell de la Terra (General Council) to serve as the seat of Andorra's parliament and courts for over three centuries. Architecturally, the building showcases a quadrangular floor plan with three galleries, typical of stately homes of the period. The exterior features traditional lime and sandstone mortar, granite keystones on the main entrance, and a gabled slate rooftop. A prominent dovecote-style tower stands at one corner. The main facade displays the Busquets family coat of arms alongside Andorra's coat of arms, bearing the motto 'Virtus, Unita, Fortior' (United virtue is stronger). The square in front features bronze sculptures depicting key moments in Andorran history, such as the signing of the Pariatge and the 1993 constitutional referendum. Inside, visitors can explore the Criminal Court on the ground floor, adorned with wooden furniture, and the Hall of Lost Steps on the first floor, featuring original 16th-century murals. The first floor also houses the Council Chamber, a chapel dedicated to St. Ermengol, and the 'closet of the seven keys,' which safeguards historical documents like the Manual Digest and Politar Andorrà. Although the parliament moved to a new building in 2011, Casa de la Vall continues to host state events. Visiting Casa de la Vall provides insight into Andorra's history, governance, and unique cultural heritage.
