Robleda de la Margineda: Unveiling Andorra's Medieval Past

Robleda de la Margineda, located in Santa Coloma, Andorra, is a significant archaeological site that offers a glimpse into the country's rich medieval past. Excavations that began in 2007 have unearthed one of the most important medieval settlements documented in Andorra and the southern Pyrenees. The site spans 4,000 square meters and reveals a settlement dating back to the 12th to 14th centuries. This settlement includes at least five clustered houses with various rooms, spread around public transit spaces or streets. The well-preserved structures and numerous artifacts provide detailed insights into daily life in medieval Andorra. Among the findings are bronze, iron, and ceramic objects. The archaeological complex is located on land belonging to the Cardelus-Mestre family. Funding from Molines Patrimonies and grants from the Andorran government have supported the restoration and preservation of this cultural heritage site. The Andorra la Vella Council joined the effort in 2012. Visitors can explore the archaeological findings and learn about the ancient civilizations that once inhabited the area. The site opened to the public in the summer of 2012, presenting the results of extensive digs that have reshaped essential aspects of Andorra's history. Guided tours are available in Catalan, Spanish, French, and English, offering context and stories that bring the artifacts to life. The site also holds the remains of the castle of Sant Vicenç, where the Viscounts of Castellbò and the Counts of Foix exerted their power over the valleys in opposition to the Bishop of Urgell. This fortress was occupied between 1190 and 1288 and was a key location for pacts between lords that ensured Andorra's existence for eight centuries.
