Discover more about St. Esteve of Andorra Church

St. Esteve Church, also known as Església de Sant Esteve, stands as a testament to Andorra's religious and architectural heritage. Located in the heart of Andorra la Vella, the church's origins trace back to the 12th century, though it has undergone significant modifications, particularly in the 20th century. Originally built in the Romanesque style, the church retains key features of this period, including the semi-circular apse, which is the largest and most richly decorated in Andorra. The apse features two double-slit windows and a quarter-sphere roof made of pumice stone. The exterior showcases a saw-tooth frieze and blind arches in the Lombard style. The west front is a work by the Catalan architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. Inside, visitors can admire Baroque altarpieces and an 18th-century painting known as the 'Picture of the Souls'. While some of the original 13th-century murals are now preserved in the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the church continues to offer a glimpse into Andorra's artistic past. The major restoration from the 20th century happened in 1940, which was also made by Josep Puig. Today, St. Esteve Church remains an iconic symbol of Andorra, welcoming visitors with its blend of historical and artistic elements.
