Discover more about Casa de la Vall

Casa de la Vall, located in the heart of Andorra la Vella, is one of the most symbolic buildings in Andorra. Constructed in 1580 as a manor house for the Busquets family, it was strategically built on a rock overlooking the Valira River valley. Its robust exterior, featuring greyish stone and a watchtower, reflects its original function as a fortified house. In 1702, the Casa de la Vall became the seat of the Consell General (General Council), Andorra's parliament, and remained so until 2011. This marked a significant period in Andorran history, as the building witnessed the country's transformation from a feudal society to a modern parliamentary democracy. Even after the parliament moved to a new building, Casa de la Vall continues to host the most formal events in the country. Inside, visitors can explore several historically significant rooms. The ground floor houses the Criminal Court, complete with original wooden furniture. The first floor features the Hall of Lost Steps, adorned with 16th-century wall paintings, and the Council Chamber. One of the most intriguing features is the Cabinet of the Seven Keys, which safeguarded Andorra's crucial historical documents, requiring all seven parish representatives to unlock it together, symbolizing unity and equality. The exterior of Casa de la Vall combines elements of a medieval fortress with traditional Pyrenean architecture. The main facade displays the coat of arms of the Busquets family and Andorra's motto, "Virtus, Unita, Fortior" (Virtue, United, is Stronger). The surrounding square features bronze sculptures depicting key moments in Andorran history.
