Sant Miquel d'Engolasters: A Romanesque Gem in Andorra

Sant Miquel d'Engolasters, located in the parish of Escaldes-Engordany, is a captivating example of Romanesque architecture in Andorra. Dating back to the 12th century, this church stands as a testament to the country's deep-rooted Christian heritage and the historical importance of religion in shaping the region's identity. The church's architecture is characterized by its simplicity and the use of local stone, typical of the Lombard Romanesque style. One of its most distinctive features is the slender, 17-meter-high bell tower, which seems disproportionate to the nave but is fundamental to the complex's overall appeal. The exterior also features subtle sculptural details, including sculpted heads at the top of the bell tower between the arches. Inside, visitors can admire a reproduction of the original Romanesque murals that once adorned the semicircular apse. The original paintings, attributed to the Master of Santa Coloma, are now preserved in the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC). The replica depicts Christ in Majesty surrounded by the tetramorph, with the Archangel Michael, the church's patron saint, merged with the symbol of Saint Matthew. Located at an altitude of 1,500 meters, Sant Miquel d'Engolasters blends seamlessly into the mountainous landscape, offering exceptional panoramic views of the Andorra la Vella valley. The surrounding area is also ideal for hiking, with numerous trails leading to scenic viewpoints and the nearby Engolasters Lake.
