Discover more about St. Esteve of Andorra Church

St. Esteve of Andorra Church, located in the heart of Andorra la Vella, stands as a testament to the country's rich religious and architectural history. Originally built in the 12th century, the church showcases a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, reflecting the evolution of Andorran architecture over the centuries. The church's exterior is characterized by its sturdy stone structure and prominent bell tower, offering a picturesque backdrop against the Pyrenean mountains. The bell tower, with its triangular roof, is a particularly striking feature. The apse is the largest and most richly decorated of the Romanesque apses preserved in Andorra. It features two double slit windows and a quarter sphere roof made of pumice stone. Inside, visitors can admire the serene and contemplative atmosphere, enhanced by the warm light filtering through stained glass windows. Notable interior elements include a wooden polychrome beam that crosses the apse, and Baroque altarpieces. The church has undergone several modifications, including a significant restoration in 1940 by modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, who remodeled the bell tower and the side entrance. Today, St. Esteve Church remains an active place of worship and a significant cultural landmark in Andorra la Vella.
