Discover more about Pont de la Margineda

The Pont de la Margineda, located in Santa Coloma, Andorra la Vella, is a captivating vestige of Andorra's medieval past. Constructed in the late 15th century, around 1487, this bridge stands as the oldest in the country, a testament to the enduring craftsmanship of the era. Spanning the Gran Valira River, Andorra's largest, the Pont de la Margineda was strategically positioned along the Royal Road, the primary route connecting Sant Julià de Lòria with Andorra la Vella. Its location at the mouth of La Portella d'Aixovall allowed the Royal Road to split, offering travelers a choice between sunlit and shaded paths. The bridge's design features a single, elegant semicircular arch with a span of 9.20 meters. Reaching a height of over 9 meters and a length of 33 meters, the bridge is made of granite walls and pumice arch stones, chosen to reduce its overall weight. This delicate balance of materials has allowed the bridge to withstand numerous floods over the centuries. Today, the Pont de la Margineda is recognized as a Property of Cultural Interest, a national heritage site since July 6, 2003. Adjacent to the bridge stands a modern sculpture by Andreu Alfaro, commemorating the first Congress of Catalan Language and Literature, symbolizing the connection between Andorra's past and present. A small parking area is available near the bridge, making it easily accessible for visitors.
