Discover more about Pont de la Tosca

The Pont de la Tosca is a captivating stone bridge located in the parish of Escaldes-Engordany, Andorra. Built in 1820, it replaced an older wooden bridge and has since become a symbol of the region's rich history. The bridge crosses the Riu Madriu, a tributary of the Valira d'Orient river. Historically, the Pont de la Tosca served as a crucial passage, connecting Engolasters with Escaldes. It was used by farmers and herders to transport grain and livestock, particularly to the Andorra-la-Vella fair. The bridge also facilitated travel between the lower parishes (Andorra-la-Vella and Escaldes-Engordany) and the higher parishes (Canillo, Encamp). This strategic importance likely led to its construction as a replacement for the original wooden structure. The bridge is constructed of masonry, featuring a single, semi-circular granite arch. It stretches 7 meters in length, with the highest point of the arch reaching 10 meters above the riverbed. A protective wall, approximately one meter high, lines the bridge. The bridge's image is featured on the Escaldes-Engordany parish coat of arms. The Pont de la Tosca has been recognized as a monument of cultural interest since July 16, 2003.
