Sant Miquel d'Engolasters: A Romanesque Jewel

Nestled in the Andorran Pyrenees, Sant Miquel d'Engolasters is a charming example of Romanesque architecture. Dating back to the 12th century, this church reflects Andorra's Christian heritage and the significance of religion in shaping the region. The church is located in Engolasters, in the parish of Escaldes-Engordany. The church's architecture features thick stone walls, a simple rectangular nave, and a semicircular apse. The slender, 17-meter-high bell tower is a distinctive feature, seemingly disproportionate to the nave but fundamental to the overall structure. Inside, visitors can see a replica of the original Romanesque murals, the originals of which are preserved in the National Art Museum of Catalonia. The apse displays a reproduction of the Maiestas Domini (Christ in Majesty) mural by the Master of Santa Coloma. Surrounded by the Pyrenees, Sant Miquel d'Engolasters offers panoramic views of the mountains and valleys, creating a tranquil setting. The church is accessible by car, bicycle, or public transport. It is near Lake Engolasters and the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
