Calandula Falls, also known as Quedas de Kalandula in Portuguese, is a majestic waterfall located in the Calandula municipality of Angola's Malanje Province. Formerly named Duque de Bragança Falls during the Angolan Civil War, it has reverted to its original title. The falls are formed by the Lucala River and are among the largest waterfalls in Africa, boasting a height of 105 meters (344 feet) and a width of 400 meters (1,300 feet).The surrounding landscape is characterized by lush greenery and tropical forests, providing a haven for diverse plant and animal life.     Getting There

    Driving

    From the town of Calandula, the falls are easily accessible by car. Follow the signs towards the Pousada de Calandula. A short distance before reaching the Pousada, you'll encounter a checkpoint where an entrance fee is collected. As of January 2022, the fee was 500 Kwanzas per person and 1000 Kwanzas per vehicle. The road to the Pousada is in poor condition in some sections.

    Walking

    Once at the Pousada de Calandula, there are walking trails leading to various viewpoints of the falls. Some trails lead to the top of the falls, while others descend closer to the base. Be aware that the trails can be muddy, especially during the rainy season. Local guides may offer their services to accompany you on these trails; negotiate the price beforehand.
