Quicama National Park, also known as Kissama National Park, stands as a symbol of resilience and conservation in Angola. Established in 1957, the park covers approximately 9,600 square kilometers and is located about 75 kilometers south of Luanda. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Cuanza and Longa rivers to the north and south respectively. The park's landscape is diverse, encompassing everything from dense forests and open savannahs to wetlands and coastal plains. This variety supports a wide array of flora and fauna, including species such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, various antelopes, and numerous bird species. Birdwatching is a particularly popular activity due to the park's wealth of nesting and migratory birds. Quicama National Park has a rich history, initially established as a hunting reserve in 1938 before being declared a national park. The park suffered greatly during the Angolan Civil War, with widespread poaching decimating animal populations. In 2001, the Kissama Foundation launched 'Operation Noah's Ark,' a historic animal transplant that brought elephants and other animals from neighboring Botswana and South Africa to repopulate the park. This initiative marked a turning point, helping to restore Quicama to its natural state and making it the only fully operational national park in Angola. Visitors to Quicama can experience the beauty of Angola's natural landscapes and witness the ongoing conservation efforts. The park offers a unique opportunity to see wildlife in a revitalized environment, influenced by the collaborative efforts of the Angolan government and neighboring countries.
