Discover more about Parque da Quissama

Parque da Quissama, or Kissama National Park, stands as a testament to Angola's commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Established in 1957, the park covers approximately 9,600 square kilometers, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Cuanza and Longa rivers to the north and south respectively. After enduring significant damage during the Angolan Civil War, including widespread poaching, the park has undergone a remarkable transformation. 'Operation Noah's Ark' in 2001, one of the largest animal transplant projects in history, saw the introduction of elephants and other species from Botswana and South Africa, revitalizing the park's ecosystem. Today, visitors can explore diverse landscapes ranging from savannah grasslands and dense forests to riverine vegetation and coastal beaches. While wildlife sightings aren't guaranteed, the park is home to species such as elephants, giraffes, various antelopes, and a wealth of birdlife, making it a haven for birdwatchers. Boat safaris along the Cuanza River and visits to local cultural sites like Calumbo enhance the experience. The park is actively involved in conservation efforts, including the Lion Conservation Unit program, contributing to the repopulation of Africa's lion population. Parque da Quissama offers a unique opportunity to witness the revival of a national park and connect with Angola's natural beauty. Whether you're on a game drive, birdwatching, or simply immersing yourself in the serene landscapes, a visit to Quissama is an unforgettable African adventure.
