Discover more about Museum of the Armed Forces

The Museum of the Armed Forces, located in the Fortaleza de São Miguel in Luanda, stands as a powerful testament to Angola's journey through conflict and independence. Established in 1975 after Angola gained its independence, the museum serves as a repository of the nation's military history. The museum's collection features a wide array of military artifacts, including bi-motor airplanes, combat vehicles, and various arms used during the Angolan War of Independence (1961–1974), the South African Border War (1966-1991), and the Angolan Civil War (1975–2002). These exhibits offer insights into the strategies, technologies, and human experiences that shaped these conflicts. Beyond military hardware, the museum also displays statues that once adorned colonial Luanda's avenues and plazas. These include figures such as Diogo Cão, the first European to set foot in Angola; Paulo Dias de Novais, the founder of Luanda; Vasco da Gama; and Luís de Camões. The fortress itself is a historical site, constructed in 1576 and later becoming the administrative center of the colony and a key point in the slave trade. A restoration project between 1997 and 2013 revitalized the museum and its grounds. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 8 AM to 4 PM.
