Discover more about Museum of the Armed Forces

The Museum of the Armed Forces, or Museu das Forças Armadas, is situated within the Fortaleza de São Miguel de Luanda in the Ingombota district. Established in 1975 following Angola's independence, the museum serves as a repository of the nation's military history. The museum's collection includes a wide array of military artifacts, such as bi-motor airplanes, combat vehicles, and diverse arms used during the Angolan War of Independence (1961–1974), the South African Border War (1966-1991), and the Angolan Civil War (1975–2002). It also houses statues that once adorned colonial Luanda, including those of Diogo Cão, Paulo Dias de Novais, Vasco da Gama, and Luís de Camões. The São Miguel Fortress itself is a significant historical site. Constructed in 1576, it became the administrative center of the colony in 1627 and played a role in the slave trade to Brazil. The fortress underwent extensive restoration between 1997 and 2013. Today, visitors can explore the museum's exhibits and enjoy panoramic views of the bay and city.
