Church of Our Lady of Remedies: A Historical Cathedral in Luanda

The Church of Our Lady of Remedies, or Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, is a captivating cathedral located in the heart of Luanda, Angola. Built in 1628, it holds a prominent place in the city's history, initially constructed to serve the local traders and inhabitants, rivalling the religious presence in uptown Luanda. In 1716, it became the city's cathedral when the Diocese of Angola and Congo moved its headquarters to Luanda. The church's architecture reflects its layered past. The original structure, completed in 1670, boasted a baroque façade with three doors, triangular pediments, and two belfries. However, it was completely ruined in 1877. Rebuilt between 1880 and 1900, it acquired its current appearance, characterized by three doors and a curved pediment on its main facade. The interior is adorned with stained glass windows, creating a peaceful ambiance. Designated as a Public Interest property in 1949 during the Portuguese administration, the Church of Our Lady of Remedies has served as a central religious institution, accommodating over 3 million Catholics in the Archdiocese of Luanda. Visitors can attend regular mass services and explore the surrounding vibrant neighborhood, filled with local markets and eateries.
