Discover more about Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve, situated in the eastern part of the Okavango Delta, is a protected area renowned for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. Established in 1963, it was the first reserve in Africa to be created by local tribes, the Batawana people, who were concerned about the decline of wildlife due to hunting and cattle encroachment. The reserve is named after Chief Moremi III. Moremi covers approximately 40% of the Okavango Delta, encompassing an area of about 5,000 square kilometers. Its diverse terrain includes permanent dry land like Chief's Island and the Mopane Tongue peninsula, as well as waterways, floodplains, and lagoons. This variety supports a wide array of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), as well as giraffes, zebras, hippos, and numerous antelope species. The reserve is also a significant habitat for the endangered African wild dog. Birdwatchers will find Moremi to be a paradise, with over 500 species of birds recorded. Notable species include the slaty egret, wattled crane, and African fish eagle. The best time for birdwatching is during the wet season (November to April) when migratory species are present. Visitors can explore Moremi through game drives, mokoro excursions (traditional dugout canoes), and walking safaris. The dry season (May to October) is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals congregate around water sources. However, the wet season offers lush landscapes and unique birdwatching opportunities, though some areas may be inaccessible due to flooding. Moremi is divided into several key areas, each offering distinct experiences : * **Chief's Island:** The largest island in the Delta, known for its high concentration of predators. * **Xakanaxa Lagoon:** A picturesque area with excellent birdwatching and opportunities to see hippos and crocodiles. * **Khwai River:** Renowned for its diverse wildlife, including elephants, leopards, and wild dogs.
