Tundavala Gap: Angola's Awe-Inspiring Vista

Tundavala Gap (Fenda da Tundavala in Portuguese) is a breathtaking canyon located on the Serra da Leba escarpment, approximately 18 km from Lubango, in Angola's Huíla Province. This natural wonder marks the western edge of the Bié Plateau. The escarpment's rim soars to over 2,200 meters, contrasting sharply with the plains below, creating a dramatic drop of approximately 1,000 meters. The name 'Tundavala' originates from the Nyaneka word Ntandavala, signifying 'what was attached/shrunken and stretched' or 'the aperture'. Tundavala Gap offers stunning panoramic views that stretch for tens of kilometers, encompassing the Huíla Plateau and extending towards Namibe. The unique geological formations, shaped by tectonic activity and erosion over millions of years, showcase layers of sedimentary rock. The area is home to diverse flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature lovers and bird watchers. While offering stunning views, Tundavala Gap also carries a sad history, as it was used to kill prisoners during the civil war.
