Discover more about Antigua's Donkey Sanctuary Humane Society

Antigua's Donkey Sanctuary, operated by the Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society, provides a permanent home for donkeys at risk. Located near Bethesda, the sanctuary currently shelters over 150 donkeys. Many of the donkeys arrive already in foal, leading to frequent 'sweet surprises'. Donkeys played a vital role in Antigua's history, serving as transport for goods on farms and to markets since the 1630s. As the sugar industry declined and trucks became more common, the need for donkeys decreased. Today, the sanctuary provides a safe place for these animals, many of whom were injured or abused. Visitors can meet donkeys like Charley, Chrissy, and Stevie, a blind donkey who receives special care. Guests are welcome to brush the donkeys and take photos. The sanctuary is wheelchair accessible, featuring a concrete pathway around the petting area and a wheelchair-accessible restroom. The Antigua & Barbuda Humane Society also operates an animal shelter for cats and dogs and conducts regular low-cost spay and neuter clinics.
