Discover more about Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre

Dow's Hill Interpretation Centre, located within Nelson's Dockyard National Park, provides a comprehensive overview of Antigua's rich history and natural beauty. The center is situated on a hill that was once part of Archibald Dow's estate and later became a strategic military fortification. Originally, the hill was the site of Archibald Dow's house, constructed in 1732. In 1789, the land was acquired to build fortifications to protect the dockyard from land attacks. The Royal Engineers constructed stone walls to make the fortifications appear more imposing. Dow's house was used by garrison officers and later became the residence for the Governor of the Leeward Islands. An earthquake in 1834 destroyed the residence, ending its occupation. In 1989, with funding from the Canadian International Development Agency, the museum was established to cater to tourists. Today, the Interpretation Centre offers visitors a multimedia presentation of Antiguan history, from its first Amerindian settlers to European agricultural settlements, its role as a British military base, and the campaign for independence. The center also features a gift shop and café-cum-bar. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of English Harbour and explore nearby historic sites.
