Clarence House: A Glimpse into Antigua's Colonial Past

Clarence House, perched on a hilltop overlooking English Harbour, is a beautifully restored example of 19th-century Caribbean living. Originally constructed between 1804 and 1806, the house was built as a residence for the Naval Commissioner of the dockyard. However, it gained prominence as the country residence for the Governors of Antigua and the Leeward Islands from 1856 onwards. Legend has it that an earlier structure stood on the site, possibly built for the Duke of Clarence (Prince William IV) during his time in the Royal Navy in the 1780s. The house has hosted numerous dignitaries and visiting officials over the years, including Winston Churchill and Princess Diana. The architecture showcases Georgian and Palladian influences, featuring stone steps leading to a loggia-style balcony. Each resident governor added to and altered the structure according to his needs. The building suffered severe damage from hurricanes in the 1990s but was meticulously restored in 2012, becoming a museum and event space. Today, visitors can explore the living quarters, admire the period furniture, and learn about the building's rich history through guided tours. From the gardens, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Freeman's Bay, Nelson's Dockyard, and the surrounding hills.
