Antigua, part of the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, is a captivating destination in the West Indies, offering a blend of natural beauty, historical depth, and cultural vibrancy. Located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, it is known for its 365 beaches, offering a different coastal experience for each day of the year.
The island's history is rich and complex, with early settlements dating back to 2900 BC by pre-agricultural Amerindians. The Arawaks, known for their agricultural practices, later settled the island and introduced crops such as corn, tobacco, and the famous Antigua Black Pineapple. Christopher Columbus sighted the island in 1493, naming it after Santa Maria la Antigua of Seville. However, European colonization didn't begin until 1632 when the English settled and established sugar plantations, relying heavily on enslaved African labor.
Today, Antigua is a popular tourist destination with attractions such as Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a continuously operating Georgian dockyard. Shirley Heights offers panoramic views of English and Falmouth Harbours, especially stunning at sunset. St. John's, the capital city, features colorful markets, the iconic St. John's Cathedral, and Heritage Quay for shopping. Visitors can explore Betty's Hope, a restored sugar plantation, or swim with stingrays at Stingray City. The island also offers opportunities for sailing, snorkeling, diving, and zip-lining through the rainforest.

Getting There
Taxi
Taxis are readily available at V.C. Bird International Airport and major hotels. A taxi from the airport to St. John's, the capital, costs approximately US$7. To reach Nelson's Dockyard or Shirley Heights, expect to pay around US$21. Taxi fares are fixed and should be confirmed with the driver before starting your journey. Tipping is customary, around 10-15% of the fare.
Public Transport
Buses, locally known as "jitneys," operate from St. John's to various villages. They are a cost-effective way to get around, but schedules can be unpredictable. Buses do not serve the airport or the main tourist areas in the north. A typical bus ride costs just a few Eastern Caribbean Dollars (ECD). Be sure to have small change, as drivers may not have large amounts for change.
Car Rental
Renting a car offers the most flexibility for exploring the island. Several rental companies operate at the airport. The cost is approximately US$40-50 per day. Driving is on the left-hand side. An Antiguan driver's license is required, which can be obtained from the rental company for around US$12. Fuel costs about $37 USD for a week of driving.
