Getting There

  • Driving

    From St. John's, drive south along Valley Road until you reach the village of Jennings. Continue through Jennings on Valley Road, and just as you exit the main area of shops and buildings, turn left at the first bus stop onto a dirt track. Follow this dirt track for about a mile to a grassy area where you can park. From there, walk along the dirt track for another 300 meters to reach the start of the Mount Obama Trail on your right. A 4x4 vehicle is preferable due to the condition of the dirt track. There are no parking fees.

    Take a bus from St. John's to Liberta. From Liberta, it's a short walk to the trailhead, which is marked. Buses from St. John's to Liberta typically cost around EC$2. Be prepared for potentially infrequent bus service.

Mount Obama, rising 1,319 feet (402 meters) above sea level, is located in the southwestern region of Antigua and is the highest point on the island. Formerly known as Boggy Peak, it was renamed on August 4, 2009, in honor of Barack Obama, the first Black president of the United States. This renaming symbolizes excellence, triumph, hope, and dignity for all people. The mountain offers a diverse hiking experience with trails catering to different fitness levels. The trails wind through lush vegetation, including mango orchards and dwarf papaya trees. As hikers ascend, they can enjoy the cool mountain breeze and the sounds of local birds. The summit provides stunning 360-degree views of the island, the Caribbean Sea, and neighboring islands on a clear day. Mount Obama also holds historical significance. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the hills served as a refuge for escaped African slaves, known as maroons. Today, the area is part of Mount Obama National Park, which supports native plant and bird species and is recognized as an Important Bird Area ecosystem.
