The VC Bird Monument, prominently located in St. John's, Antigua, is a powerful tribute to Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, the first Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda. Affectionately regarded as the "father of the nation," V.C. Bird played a pivotal role in leading the twin-island nation to independence from British colonial rule, serving as Prime Minister from 1981 to 1994.
The monument, designed and sculpted by Cuban artist Andres Gonzalez, was erected in 2002, three years after Bird's death. The monument stands 10 meters (33 feet) tall, and depicts a besuited middle-aged Bird with his hand on his chest. Next to him is a black pineapple, a type of fruit that is said to be a delicacy and unique to the island.
The monument not only commemorates Bird's legacy but also serves as a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. The surrounding area, often enlivened by local musicians and artists, provides a serene backdrop for reflection and exploration.
