Discover more about St. George's Anglican Church

St. George's Anglican Church, located in the tranquil village of Fitches Creek, stands as a testament to Antigua's enduring history and faith. Established in 1687 on land granted to Daniel Fitch, it is one of the oldest churches on the island. Initially a chapel of ease to St. Peter's in Parham, St. George's was elevated to a parish church in 1725, reflecting the growing settlements between St. John's Harbour and Parham. The current structure, resembling a stone-built manor house, was rebuilt in 1735. Its architecture features a three-aisled design with arched windows and a portico-style entrance, creating a unique blend of Caribbean and English influences. Throughout its history, St. George's has faced numerous challenges, particularly from hurricanes. Significant damage occurred in 1950 during Hurricane Dog, requiring 15 years of restoration, and again in 1995 during Hurricane Luis. Rededicated in 2001, the church continues to serve as a spiritual anchor for the community. The surrounding churchyard is rumored to be haunted, adding an element of intrigue to its serene atmosphere. Today, St. George's Anglican Church is part of the Parish of St. George's with St. Mark's and St. Francis, maintaining its role as a place of worship and a historical landmark. Visitors can appreciate its architecture, tranquil setting, and the stories it holds of Antigua's past.
