Discover more about Quilmes Ruins

The Quilmes Ruins, also known as the Sacred City of Quilmes, are located in the Calchaquí Valley of Tucumán Province, Argentina. These ruins represent the largest pre-Columbian settlement in Argentina, sprawling across 30 hectares. The Quilmes people, part of the Diaguita culture, inhabited this area from approximately 850 AD, developing a sophisticated society with intricate irrigation systems. At its peak, the city housed around 5,000 inhabitants. The Quilmes were known for their fierce resistance to outside forces. They successfully defended their city against the Inca Empire around 1480. However, in 1667, after years of conflict, the Spanish conquistadors finally conquered the Quilmes. The survivors, numbering around 2,000, were forced on a grueling march to a reservation near Buenos Aires, with many perishing en route. The modern city of Quilmes, in Buenos Aires Province, bears their name in remembrance. Today, visitors can explore the reconstructed ruins, including residential areas, a mountaintop fortress, and two smaller forts. Walking through the site, one can appreciate the advanced architectural and engineering skills of the Quilmes people. The on-site museum provides valuable context, displaying artifacts and explaining the history and culture of this ancient civilization. Climbing to the watchtowers offers panoramic views of the Calchaquí Valley, providing a sense of the strategic importance of this settlement.
