Discover more about Laguna de la Niña Encantada

Laguna de la Niña Encantada, or the Lagoon of the Enchanted Girl, is a captivating natural spring located in the southern part of Mendoza Province, Argentina. Situated approximately 55 km from Malargüe along Provincial Route 222, the lagoon is a mesmerizing body of water with crystal-clear, emerald-toned waters fed by underground rivers. The lagoon itself is relatively small, with a diameter of about 80 meters, but its beauty is amplified by the surrounding volcanic landscape. The lagoon's unique color is attributed to the white gypsum walls covered in green algae, which reflect a turquoise hue. The bottom of the lagoon features volcanic rocks that create suggestive formations when reflected in the water. This area was once the site of volcanic activity, and remnants of lava flows surround the lagoon. The microclimate around the spring supports diverse vegetation and birdlife, adding to the area's allure. The name of the lagoon comes from a local legend about Elcha, the daughter of a peaceful Cacique tribe. Elcha fell in love with a young man from her tribe, but was betrothed to the son of a Pehuenche chief to ensure peace between the tribes. Unwilling to be separated, Elcha and her lover fled, but were pursued. Cornered at the lagoon's edge and fearing the tribe's witch, they chose to jump into the cold waters together. The legend says that on nights with a full moon, Elcha's face can be seen reflected in the water. Visitors can access the lagoon via a short gravel road from Route 222. A short walk across the Puente de Elcha (Elcha's Bridge) over the Salado River leads to a viewpoint. A small entrance fee is required to access the area. While fishing is prohibited, hiking, horseback riding, and photography are popular activities.
