Discover more about Plaza España

Plaza España, inaugurated in 1949 after the devastating 1861 earthquake, stands as a vibrant testament to the enduring bond between Argentina and Spain. Often considered the most beautiful square in Mendoza, it forms part of the green space connected to Plaza Independencia. The square's design evokes a traditional Spanish patio, featuring a central fountain adorned with colorful Andalusian tiles. The Monument to Hispanic-Argentine Brotherhood, sculpted in San Juan travertine marble by Luis Bartolomé Somoza, is a highlight. It features a woman symbolizing Spain and a young woman representing Argentina, holding a cluster of grapes, a symbol of the Mendoza region. A relief of one of Christopher Columbus's caravels and two oxen pulling a plow, representing the country's fertile land, are also part of the monument. The frieze at the base, created by artist Manuel Escudero, consists of seven scenes in painted ceramic, depicting the founding of Mendoza by Pedro del Castillo in 1561, the Discovery of America, the missionary work of religious orders, and scenes from Don Quixote and Martín Fierro. Plaza España hosts cultural events, art exhibitions, and local festivals throughout the year.
