Discover more about Torre Tanque

The Torre Tanque (Tank Tower) is a unique and functioning water tower in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Constructed between 1939 and 1943, it replaced an older concrete tower from 1911 to meet the growing water demands of the city's elite, who favored the Stella Maris hills for their summer homes. Architect Cornelio Lange designed the tower in Tudor Revival style to harmonize with the surrounding eclectic architecture. The tower stands 40.75 meters tall on a hill 40 meters above sea level, bringing the total height to 88 meters. Its cistern can hold 13,000,000 liters of water, with an elevated tank holding an additional 500,000 liters. Visitors can ascend to the lookout via a 194-step spiral staircase or by elevator to enjoy 360-degree views of the city center, beaches, and hills. The exterior is clad in quartzite rocks, known locally as Piedra Mar del Plata, a key feature of the vernacular Mar del Plata style. Declared a National Historic Monument in 2013, the Torre Tanque remains an emblem of Mar del Plata's history and its commitment to providing essential services. Guided tours offer insights into the tower's operation, history, and the city's water supply system. The tower is not only a functional piece of infrastructure but also a beloved landmark offering a unique perspective on Mar del Plata's landscape and heritage.
