Discover more about Archivo Histórico de Mendoza

The Archivo Histórico de Mendoza, or Historical Archive of Mendoza, is a treasure trove of documents and artifacts that illuminate the rich history of the Mendoza province. Located in a historic building that once served as part of the city's train station, the archive is dedicated to preserving and sharing Mendoza's past. Founded in 1884 during the governorship of Rufino Ortega, the archive brought together the Oficina Conservadora (Judicial Archive) and the Archivo de Gobierno (Government Archive), which included the Cabildo archive. This consolidation created a central repository for the province's historical records. The archive's collection includes royal decrees, General San Martín's proclamations, legal documents, military records, and correspondence with other provinces and countries. The library houses approximately 4,000 volumes covering a wide range of topics. The archive also boasts an extensive collection of newspapers dating back to 1863, as well as journals, magazines, and other publications. The audiovisual archive contains a collection of photographs organized by theme. The building itself is a piece of history, having been part of the Trasandino Railway station. Declared a Provincial Heritage Site in 1998, the station reflects the architectural style of late 19th-century Argentina. The main facade faces north, towards the city, and the original entrance was located on Sargento Cabral Street. Today, the Archivo Histórico de Mendoza offers a range of services to the community, including guided tours, a library, and an auditorium. It is a valuable resource for researchers, students, and anyone interested in learning more about the history of Mendoza.
