Discover more about Obelisco

Rising from the Plaza de la República, where the wide Avenida 9 de Julio intersects with Avenida Corrientes, the Obelisco is a striking presence in Buenos Aires. This iconic structure was built in 1936 to mark the 400th anniversary of the first, though ultimately unsuccessful, founding of the city by Pedro de Mendoza in 1536. Designed by Alberto Prebisch, a prominent figure in Argentine modernism, the Obelisco has become a focal point for celebrations, demonstrations, and cultural events. Each side of the 67.5-meter-tall monument represents a significant moment in Buenos Aires's past: the first founding in 1536, the second founding in 1580, the first raising of the Argentine flag in 1812, and the declaration of Buenos Aires as the nation's capital in 1880. The Obelisco stands on the site where the Church of San Nicolás once stood, the very place where the Argentine flag was first raised. Though access to the top is currently restricted, the Obelisco remains a powerful symbol. Over the years, it has been adorned and decorated for various occasions, including being transformed into a Christmas tree and a giant pencil. Despite initial resistance to its construction, the Obelisco has become an integral part of the city's identity, a testament to Buenos Aires's vibrant history and culture.
