The Obelisco de Buenos Aires, located in Plaza de la República, is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. This iconic structure was built in 1936 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the first, albeit unsuccessful, founding of Buenos Aires by Pedro de Mendoza in 1536. Designed by Alberto Prebisch, a prominent figure in Argentine modernism, the Obelisco stands 67.5 meters (221 feet) tall. The Obelisco marks the intersection of two of Buenos Aires' most important avenues: Avenida 9 de Julio, known as one of the widest streets in the world, and Avenida Corrientes, famed for its vibrant nightlife and theaters. Each side of the obelisk is 8.8 meters (29 feet) wide.Inside, a staircase with 206 steps and seven resting places leads to a viewing platform at the top, though it is generally closed to the public. The monument has been the focal point for numerous events, from political demonstrations to sports celebrations. It has also been used for artistic and political interventions, such as being decorated as a Christmas tree or a giant pink condom for World AIDS Day.The Obelisco wasn't always beloved; in fact, there was significant resistance to it initially, with authorities even sanctioning its demolition three years after its inauguration. However, the mayor vetoed this decision, and the Obelisco has since become a cherished symbol of Buenos Aires.
