Public Transport
To reach Refugio Frey, start by taking Bus 55 from Bariloche to the base of Cerro Catedral. The bus ride costs approximately 80 pesos. From the bus stop, follow the signs towards the ski lifts and locate the trailhead for Refugio Frey. The traditional trail begins to the left of the ski lifts. There is no entrance fee for Nahuel Huapi National Park.
Walking
From the base of Cerro Catedral, the most common access to Refugio Frey is on foot via the traditional trail. The hike is approximately 10 km (6 miles) and takes around 4 hours. Follow the well-marked path, crossing the Van Titter creek and passing Refugio Piedritas before reaching Refugio Frey. Be prepared for a steep ascent towards the end of the hike.
Cable Car/Walking
During the summer months, an alternative route involves taking a cable car and chairlift from Cerro Catedral to Punta Princesa or Refugio Lynch. Check the Cerro Catedral website for current prices and operating hours. From Refugio Lynch, it's a 3-4 hour hike to Refugio Frey along a rocky ridgeline. This route offers stunning views but requires some scrambling.
