Discover more about Güirá Oga

Güirá Oga is more than just a wildlife refuge; it's a center for conservation and environmental education located in the Misiones jungle. Founded in 1997 by naturalists Jorge Anfuso and Silvia Elsegood, the 19-hectare property provides a sanctuary for injured, orphaned, and rescued animals, with a special focus on birds of prey. The refuge rescues animals that have been wounded by poachers, traumatized by traffickers, injured in accidents, or abandoned by owners. Upon arrival, the animals receive a complete medical assessment by staff veterinarians. Those with minor injuries are treated and usually returned to their habitat within 48 hours. Animals with more serious conditions enter a rehabilitation program with the goal of releasing them back into the wild whenever possible. Those that cannot survive in the wild remain in the refuge and may participate in breeding programs. A visit to Güirá Oga begins with a truck ride through the protected landscape, followed by a walk through the jungle. Knowledgeable guides share the stories of the animals and the challenges they face, including toucans, parrots, monkeys, and other mammals. Visitors can observe the animals in naturalistic settings and learn about the importance of protecting the jungle and its biodiversity. Güirá Oga actively participates in research and reintroduction programs, contributing to the preservation of endangered species in Argentina's Atlantic Forest.
