Discover more about Plaza San Martín

Plaza San Martín, a central gem in Rosario, Argentina, invites visitors to immerse themselves in its historical and cultural significance. This expansive park is not only a green refuge amidst the urban hustle but also a celebrated gathering place for both locals and visitors. The plaza occupies the block defined by Santa Fe St., Dorrego St., Córdoba St., and Moreno St., along the historical segment of Córdoba St. called Paseo del Siglo. Originally purposed as a marketplace in 1857, the land was donated by Marcos Paz to accommodate cargo wagons. With the advent of the railway system in 1871, the municipality envisioned a square, officially named Plaza San Martín in 1884. The municipality relinquished a significant portion of the land in 1888 for the construction of the Tribunals Palace, shaping the plaza into its current dimensions. Landscaping works began in 1891 under Mayor Gabriel Carrasco. At the heart of the plaza stands a bronze statue of General San Martín, mounted on a horse and carrying a flag. This statue, inaugurated on May 21, 1913, is a replica of the monument in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, where San Martín spent his exile and died. Flanking the plaza are important buildings, including the former Tribunals Palace, now home to the Faculty of Law of the National University of Rosario and the Dr. Ángel Gallardo Provincial Natural Sciences Museum, and the former headquarters of the Santa Fe Provincial Police, which now houses a delegation of the provincial government and the Centro Popular de la Memoria, a small museum of the last dictatorship. Today, Plaza San Martín is a focal point for civic events, cultural festivities, and social gatherings. It also serves as a meeting place for marches, particularly the National Day of Remembrance for Truth and Justice on March 24. The surrounding area offers tourists local cafés, shops, and historical landmarks, making the plaza an excellent starting point for exploring Rosario. As day turns to night, the plaza transforms into a lively hub where locals and visitors enjoy evening strolls amidst the illuminated surroundings.
