Plaza Belgrano, originally known as "Campo de las Carreras," holds a significant place in Salta's history, having been the site of the Battle of Tucumán in 1812. The plaza was formally created in 1858 and laid out in 1872, becoming a central gathering place for locals and tourists alike.The plaza is adorned with a bronze statue of General Manuel Belgrano, sculpted by Francisco Cafferata in 1885 and donated by President Julio A. Roca. The statue stands on a marble pedestal, a tribute to Belgrano's contributions to Argentine independence. The French-origin iron fountain is another prominent feature.Plaza Belgrano is surrounded by important historical buildings, including the Cabildo, the Salta Cathedral, and the Museo de Arqueología de Alta Montaña (MAAM). The Usandivaras Palace and the provincial police station are also nearby, adding to the area's architectural richness. A plaque marks the spot where General Martín Miguel de Güemes was mortally wounded, further connecting the plaza to Argentina's struggle for independence.Today, Plaza Belgrano remains a vibrant hub of activity. It provides a green space for relaxation, cultural events, and a place to appreciate Salta's historical roots. The plaza was declared a "national historic place" on July 12, 1941.
