Ferry and Car
To reach Mount Darwin, start from Punta Arenas. Drive 171 km north to Punta Delgada and take a 20-minute ferry across the Strait of Magellan to Bahia Azul. The ferry operates frequently, but check the schedule in advance. From Bahia Azul, drive 40 km to Cerro Sombrero to refuel. Continue south, as some sections may be unpaved, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Note: From Porvenir a local road towards the east leads to the base of Mount Darwin. Ferry cost: Approximately $10-$20 USD per vehicle. Fuel costs will vary. There may be tolls along Route 9.
Public Transportation and Taxi
From Punta Arenas, take a bus to Puerto Natales. Buses operate frequently, and the journey takes about 3 hours. Once in Puerto Natales, find a local bus service to Timaukel. This bus ride can take an additional 1-2 hours depending on the schedule. After reaching Timaukel, arrange a taxi or local transportation to get to the base of Mount Darwin. Be sure to check the schedules in advance as public transport may not run frequently, especially during off-peak seasons. Bus fare from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales: $10-$15 USD. Bus fare from Puerto Natales to Timaukel: $8-$12 USD. Taxi from Timaukel to Mount Darwin base: Negotiate price with local drivers.
