Located along Utah Highway 211, on the way to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, this State Historical Monument features a 200-square-foot sandstone cliff face adorned with over 650 individual rock art designs.The petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock were created over approximately 2,000 years by people from the Archaic, Basketmaker, Fremont, Ancestral Puebloan, Ute, Navajo, and Anglo cultures. These carvings depict a range of subjects, including animals such as deer, buffalo, and pronghorn antelope, as well as human figures, symbols, and what appear to be records of past events. The Navajo name for the rock, “Tse’ Hone’,” translates to “rock that tells a story,” reflecting its role as a repository of cultural narratives.The petroglyphs were created by chiseling away the dark desert varnish, a coating of iron and manganese oxides formed by rainfall and bacteria, to reveal the lighter sandstone beneath. While the exact meaning of many of the petroglyphs remains a mystery, it is believed that they served as a means of communication, record-keeping, or artistic expression for the people who created them.Today, visitors can view Newspaper Rock up close from a paved path and viewing platform. The site also offers a picnic area and restrooms, making it a comfortable stop for travelers exploring the area.
