Discover more about Brewery Gulch

Brewery Gulch, a historic district in Bisbee, Arizona, earned its name from the numerous breweries established in the late 19th century. German-Swiss immigrants founded the first breweries here in 1881. The Gulch quickly became the heart of Bisbee's rough-and-tumble mining camp, hosting saloons, gambling halls, and brothels. At one point, over 47 saloons lined the street. As Bisbee evolved into a more cultured city, Brewery Gulch retained its unique character. Although the local breweries eventually closed due to competition from cheaper, mass-produced beer, the saloons continued to thrive until Arizona enacted Prohibition in 1914. Today, Brewery Gulch is experiencing a revitalization as an arts and entertainment district. Visitors can explore its historic buildings, art galleries, and unique shops. The Gulch is also home to a variety of bars and pubs, including the oldest bar in Bisbee, St. Elmo Bar.
